Expecting only 5, we were delighted to have a litter of 7 vigorous and healthy puppies from this match.  As you can see, Kuuraturkki, known as Elias, is quite a looker but he also has a wonderful, sweet temperament.

 

Elias's colour pattern is known as Domino (although the term used by the UK KC is "grizzle").  It is characterised by his bright white face and darker coat on the top half of his body with lighter coat underneath and in the undercoat.  This colouring is recessive, and the mode of inheritance is unknown, but it means that both parents must in some way carry the gene in order to produce Domino puppies.  We had no idea Keksi was carrying this gene, so it came as a shock to get a puppy with this colouring, what we believe to be the first Domino Lapphund in the UK.  Information on colour patterns in Finnish Lapphunds can be found in this excellent article.

 

These puppies were given the middle name 'Persikka', the Finnish word for 'peach', because during our visits to the Kennel Des Royaumes du Grand Nord for the mating, Elias was utterly obsessed with eating the wonderful pink peaches that were falling from a tree in the garden.  He ate so many of them, the puppies must surely be half-Lappy-half-peach!
